Golden mantled Ground Squirrel

Pictured above is a Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel posing for me. He was sitting on one of the lookout points during my day-trip to Bryce Canyon National Park. I encountered quite a bit of wildlife in the few hours I was inside the park. I’ve spent most of my adult life living in large cities and I cherish any chance I get to see wild animals. This particular squirrel wasn’t shy and was happy to hold still for photos.

There are two species of squirrels that call Bryce Canyon home, the Golden-mantled and the Rock Squirrel. You can tell them apart by the Golden-mantled squirrel’s chipmunk-like stripes and coloration. Bryce is also home to other small rodents including  Uinta Chipmunks and Utah Prairie Dogs.

If you visit remember that it’s a great disservice to feed wildlife despite your good intentions or how cute you think they are. Travel responsibly!
